"The Pearl of the Pacific," as baptized by Captain Cook, bears the magic of the most beautiful island in French Polynesia. Rising up from the ocean over three million years ago, Bora Bora in Tahitian means "first born." One of its most striking features is its large volcanic rock formations that tower at the center of the island. This is an awe-inspiring backdrop for an already breathtaking view. Bora Bora's pristine lagoon is another one of its prized features, offering some of the most amazing snorkeling and scuba diving adventures to be experienced anywhere in the world.

In this vast lagoon, there is only one navigable pass, which faces the main village of Vaitape. More than 5,000 American servicemen were stationed on Bora Bora during World War II. The G.I.s constructed the airport that is still in use today and also inspired the romantic musical, South Pacific.

P.S. Keep in mind, what makes the appeal and uniqueness of Tahiti are the small hotels and not a lot of airlines bringing in hoards of tourists.
